The Sortes Vergilianae are a form of bibliomancy, a divination method that uses lines of books to foretell the future. Since Late Antiquity seekers have used the sortes (lots) of Vergil’s Aeneid to make predictions or receive advice from the poet. Vergil was believed to be a sort of prophet, as Christians believed he foretold the birth of Christ in Eclogue 4.
